Good article. Reveals a lot about our educational system. I'm convinced that a hefty part of the problem stems from class size. The larger the class, the less time teachers have to give children the individual attention they need. And that's a money issue. Teachers want (and deserve) more pay. That's the focus of their unions. So teachers are at odds with education. Should more money be spent on smaller classes or higher teacher salaries? My view is both. But, so long as education funding comes largely from property taxes, and folks are being taxed out of their homes, you won't get much traction there.

I don't think it takes that much longer to say, this kid is socially shy and all he needs is a friend. I also don't think it's hard if once a week a teacher, while having the class read a story, makes ten minutes just to talk to each child. It's a technique that's being totally ignored - it's called respecting children as people.

Thanks for your thoughts!
